Training

Training At Montrose ABC

We see boxing as a skill of sport & fitness and welcome juniors and seniors to train for competitive boxing or, alternatively, non-contact, advanced physical fitness.

Coaches at Montrose ABC specialise in technique training, focusing on a wide range of skills from the basic stance, advanced combination and counter combination moves.

We are keen to challenge the stereotype of boxing gyms driven by sweat and grunt. While physical strength and the ability to leadoff are definite necessities, we give equal importance to the intelligent use of fitness, evasion/defence and counter attack. To each punch we teach a wide range of defences and a range of variations of these defences. We train for fitness according to the stage of the season with steady state, interval and speed-endurance work, both in our fully equipped boxing gym at Traill Terrace and Montrose beach.

A typical nights training at Montrose ABC will consist of the following elements.

Warm Up

A 15 minute warm up before training helps to prevent sports injuries.

Shadow Boxing

Shadow boxing in front of a mirror helps the boxer perfect stance, style and technique. Its also an effective aerobic workout to increase fitness & stamina.

Skipping

Skipping requires endurance, stamina, fast foot speed and balance. All of which are key physical requirements for any boxer.

Punch Bag

The punch bag, again plays a key role in a boxer's training. With varying weights and sizes a boxing can train with the bag as if boxing an opponent. Focusing on hand speed, strength and stamina.

Pad Work - Combination & Technique

A coach will hold the pads for the boxer encouraging counter attacks and combination moves by leading with shots. They will also simulate a moving target for the boxer to aim at, enabling the boxer to deliver accurate and dynamic punches together with agile footwork.

Sparring

Sparring can be endured at many different levels, from touch sparring through to full-contact. Competitive sparring is the nearest form of training to prepare a boxer for competition.

Sparring is readily available for club members wishing to participate, providing they are of adequate boxing ability.

Sparring is only ever undertaken in a professional controlled environment and is regulated by a qualified SBA Montrose coach.

Montrose ABC DOES NOT force any club member to spar!

Floor Excercise

Floor exercise with or without the use of a medicine ball will increase the boxer's stamina, strength and flexibility.
